Cát Bà, a picturesque island in the midst of Hạ Long Bay, not only boasts breathtaking landscapes but also holds a hidden gem – the Hospital Cave. This underground structure, with its intriguing history, stands as a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the Vietnamese people during wartime.

Unveiling Hospital Cave

As visitors step into Hospital Cave, they are greeted by an architectural marvel carved into the limestone cliffs. Initially built as a secret, bomb-proof hospital in the 1960s during the Vietnam War, the cave stretches over 17,000 square meters and extends through three levels. The construction aimed to protect patients and medical staff from aerial bombings and chemical attacks.

The Strategic Location

Hospital Cave's strategic location within the heart of Cát Bà Island made it an ideal refuge during the war. With its proximity to Hạ Long Bay, it offered a discreet location for medical facilities while being easily accessible by boat, ensuring the safety of patients and medical personnel.

Hospital Facilities

Explore the cave's inner chambers, which once housed surgical rooms, treatment areas, and even a makeshift theater for entertainment during difficult times. The ingenuity displayed in creating this underground hospital is evident, with features like a water purification system and ventilation ducts that allowed for a functional and secure healthcare facility.

Life Underground

Hospital Cave not only served as a medical facility but also as a temporary home for those seeking shelter during airstrikes. The cave became a symbol of resilience and solidarity, as locals and soldiers worked together to maintain a sense of normalcy in the midst of turmoil.

Safeguarding Vietnam's Heritage

In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve Hospital Cave as a historical site, allowing visitors to witness the wartime experiences of the Vietnamese people. Guided tours provide insight into the cave's history, shedding light on the challenges faced by both medical staff and patients during one of the darkest periods in Vietnam's past.

How to Experience Hospital Cave

For those intrigued by history, a visit to Hospital Cave is a must. The cave is open to the public, and guided tours are available to provide a comprehensive understanding of its historical significance. Visitors can reach Cát Bà Island by boat from Hải Phòng or Hạ Long City and then explore the island's wonders, with Hospital Cave being a standout attraction.

Hospital Cave in Cát Bà is more than just an underground structure – it is a living testament to the strength and resilience of the Vietnamese people. As visitors delve into its depths, they embark on a journey through history, gaining a profound appreciation for the challenges faced by those who sought refuge within its walls. A visit to Hospital Cave is not just a tour; it's a chance to connect with the past and honor the indomitable spirit of a nation

We payed around 1,60€ (40.000d) per person and found the cave really interesting. We liked it but would recommend to go with a local guide. We would have loved to get some more information about the things we saw.

Impactante poder caminar por los pasillos y sentir la energía del lugar..!!
Great tour with a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide. Worth the entrance fee and the Motorbike ride up to it from town. Bring a windbreaker, it gets chilly up there.
Interesting to see how they turned the cave into a working hospital during the war
