Over thousands of years, Hanoi has preserved its traditional beauty while continuously evolving and innovating.

Architectural Beauty

The architecture of Hanoi is a blend of classical French style and traditional Vietnamese design. The old houses in the Old Quarter, the Hanoi Opera House, and French colonial structures like the Long Bien Bridge are enduring symbols of the city.

What to know before visiting Hanoi

Research weather, respect local customs, pack essentials, and embrace new flavors for a fulfilling travel experience.

Note

When traveling to Hanoi, there are important considerations that visitors should be aware of to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip:

  • Weather and Clothing: Hanoi experiences hot and humid summers from May to August, while winters from November to February can be cold and damp. Prepare appropriate clothing, including rain gear for the rainy season and warm clothes for the winter.
  • Traffic and Transportation: Traffic in Hanoi can be quite chaotic with a large number of motorcycles and cars. Be cautious when crossing streets and it's best to follow locals if possible. Using taxi services or ride-hailing apps is a safe option for getting around the city.
  • Culture and Customs: Respect the local culture and customs. Dress modestly and remove shoes when visiting temples and religious sites. Also, be aware that taking photos in some religious locations may require permission.
  • Cuisine: Hanoi is famous for its street food. However, choose eateries that maintain good hygiene and avoid raw or undercooked food to prevent food poisoning.
  • Personal Safety: Keep your belongings secure and avoid carrying large amounts of cash or unnecessary valuables. Be vigilant with your bags and wallets, especially in crowded places.
  • Language: English is not widely spoken everywhere in Hanoi. Learning some basic Vietnamese phrases can be helpful for daily communication.
  • Respect Local Laws: Always adhere to local laws and regulations. This includes not smoking in no-smoking areas and not consuming alcohol in public places unless permitted.

Visitors can fully enjoy what Hanoi has to offer, from its cultural and historical beauty to its rich cuisine and vibrant urban landscapes. Remember, understanding and respecting the local culture and regulations not only make your trip smoother but also show respect for the people and their culture.

The hotel is perfectly located to explore Hanoi Old Quarter. Rooms are clean, spacious and nicely furnished. But I think that the real spark of this place is the staff! They are superlative! in particular Ciara, helped me to plan my trip to Vietnam. She helped to organize my tours to Sapa and Halong Bay. She arranged for me taxi transportations from and to the airport. She suggested me where to eat authentic local food. She has been always available for all my questions and needs. Her with the rest of the staff were just amazing!

The hotel breakfast was a good mix of Vietnamese and Western food The room was clean and the bed comfortable Overall, I am a happy customer Located within a quiter part of the Old Quarter and surrounded with nearby minimart, food & beverage outlets and within walking distance to the lake and plenty shopping outlets that remain opened to late night

Stayed three nights in a suite. Rooms are big with window. Location is perfect in the middle of the old quarter within walking distance to all major sights in Hanoi. Hotel is spotless clean. Breakfast was great. Employees speak English very well for Vietnam and have a polite and very friendly attitude. Not stressful either as you find in many other places. If you need information or help to something, talk to Phuong at the reception. She is a great customer service and get things done. Highly recommended!

The owner, Lum (sorry of if I haven’t spelt this right) couldn’t have been friendlier or more helpful. He upgraded us to a large room in a second hotel he’s just bought nearby. He made sure we had the best visit possible in Hanoi . I’ve never seen such a well equipped room - from dressing gowns to razors and food. The room was spacious and clean, and the location was fabulous , in the old quarters, everything walkable yet slightly away from the very touristy bit and near the night market. Perfect.

Possibly a little smaller and a little more expensive than other places in Vietnam but that's the price to stay in the Old Quarter of Hanoi, which is a much more big city experience. Make sure you plan to visit on the weekend to take advantage of the open street night market. The hotel staff were exceptionally friendly and accomodations were very clean. It was good reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the old quarter. I would likely book again if I were to stay in Hanoi.

I’ve lived in Vietnam for almost 5 years and this was some of the best service I’ve had here. The hotel is brand new and the rooms are beautiful. The staff is amazing and genuinely care about the experience of the guests. It’s in a perfect location to explore the old quarter by foot and about 100 meters from Hoan Kiem lake. I can’t recommend this hotel enough. Truly a great experience and wonderful price for the value. If you come to Hanoi come stay at Hotel du LAC!

Winter Hotel  is the perfect place to stay in Hanoi. Located in the Old Quarter but not in the backpacker district allows the best of both worlds: Nice quiet sleeping hours AND lots of amazing authentic restaurants within a 2 minute walk out the door. The breakfast every day is delicious. The staff is so friendly and helpful, they arranged motorbike rental and cabs for us whenever we needed! We will definitely stay here again when we come back to Hanoi

We stayed at San Grand Hotel 2 nights and had a great time in Hanoi. We arrived in the morning, but early check-in was no problem for a little fee. Also leaving our backpacks and having a shower after check out was no problem. The staff was very courteous and asked if everything was all right. Complimentary tea time between 2-5pm in 10th floor with great view and good fruits and cakes, lovely! Varied breakfast and best location in Hanoi's old quarter.

Based in the old quarter of Hanoi it's in a really central position to explore Hanoi. The staff and management where very personable and helpful.. Tourism in Vietnam has been hit really hard by Covid and the hotel is getting back on its feet after being closed for a few years. They offer good honest accommodation, centrally based and I felt good value for money. I do after all come from England so any hotel outside of there is good value!

Very helpful and kind staff. Nice and clean accommodations. The house keeping also specially made cute dragonfly bath towels and dog bath towels to welcome us. Complimentary hot tea, crackers and bananas were available in the lobby. It's a very sweet and nice treat at the start/end of the day. The hotel is located in the Old Quarter and has very convenient transportation. It is the best way to experience the vitality of Hanoi.

The working staff was very friendly and kind, always with this typical Vietnamese smile, always willing to help you in every moment! Even if we stayed for very little time there, we definitely felt like home. They are also interested in always improving their facilities. The hotel's location is very central, meaning that you can readily reach old quarter by walking. Very nice choice for staying in Hanoi!

The personnel is amazing and very helpful, they speak English very well. We got many useful recommendations, Liliane helped us organize our stay in Hanoi and the next trips. We are very grateful! The location of the hotel is the best, close to everything however the street is calmer than others in old quarter. We could leave our luggage after check-out.

Really loved staying at this hotel. Hands down the best place to stay in the old quarters area. On weekends, the streets around the hotel turns into bustling night market, an amazing experience to walk around. Mr. Thomas and Mr. Hoan at the reception were really friendly and helpful. I will surely come back to this place when I am back in Hanoi.
